A Message from Mr. Courage

Welcome to DCES Online!

Hello Divine Child Families and Students!
 
Welcome to the DCES Online Platform!  We have been hard at work pulling together resources, materials, tutorials, videos and other technology platforms in order to best serve you all with a feeling of community, connectivity and academics.  
 

Our goals:

  • To try and provide a sense of normalcy and routine in these unsettling times
  • To stay connected as a community rooted in shared values and academics
  • To deliver engaging lessons through a digital platform
  • To increase our technology fluency, staff and students alike
  • To model what it means to take “healthy academic risks” as “a courageous learner”
  • To continue to be kind, patient and understanding, attempting to walk in the footsteps of Christ

How To Contact Us:

  • Phone:  If you call the school lines and select either Mr. Courage or Ms. Hable from the menu, your voice mail will be forwarded to our emails and cell phones.  We will try to return your call / email as quickly as possible (within 24 hours is our goal)
 
We understand that these next weeks will be a mixture of emotions and our goals for this phase of your child's education are rooted in our Catholic Faith, Catholic Social Justice and Academic Excellence.  We know there are many more questions and we will be working to address these as best we can. Please know that we are here for you all and praying for you all daily.

Distance Learning - What to Expect!

Daily Attendance

To assist with accurate record keeping, every day parents will need to record their child(ren)'s participation via a Google form throughout the school closure. Fill out one form for each child each day.  Date/Time is automatically stamped on each entry.

“Netiquette” aka Etiquette for Digital Learning (on the net!):

  • Participate in class discussions with appropriate, academic language. Make sure to use proper punctuation, spelling, and tone. 
  • Video Conference calls and any Video Submissions should take place in common rooms of your home, with a parent present (nearby) and in appropriate dress code (i.e. no pajamas). Please ensure a quiet and focused environment for both yourself and other participants. 
  • Be patient, if you have questions contact your teacher and then allow 24 hours for them to respond. If you cannot continue working without their help, move onto another subject and return to your assignment once you’ve received help.
 

Distance Learning Plans

GRADES K-2

  • Teachers have created packets for students to work on
  • These packets are now available OUTSIDE the Gym Entrances (where we dismiss).  They are in the large tubs and materials are labeled with student's names and in large ziploc bags. Please feel free to pick them up at any point
  • Teachers will still communicate via email and Class Dojo
 

GRADES 3-8

  • Google Classrooms and Google DCES.INFO Accounts
    • To deliver academic content, share documents and assignments, and to communicate with students, the 3-8 grade teachers have created GOOGLE CLASSROOMS. 
      • Please see the directions below on how to ACCESS your GOOGLE CLASSROOMS. Click here for a How-to Guide on logging into Google Classroom.
      • To access your GOOGLE CLASSROOM, your student will need to log in with their GOOGLE DCES.INFO account.  We have created these accounts for the 3rd and 4th graders, and those teachers will be communicating the credentials to all the parents.  5th and 6th graders have been using their google DCES.INFO accounts all year and should be familiar with them.  
         
      • 3rd Grade BOOK PICKUP - 9-11 am on Thursday, March 19.  Please reach out if you cannot pick up materials at that time

K-8 SPECIALS

  • The special teachers have created a BINGO Board for the students to engage with.  There are various events/activities/sites that the specials teachers have organized for the students to explore!
     
  • This BINGO BOARD will be shared via the K-8 Specials Site and Class Dojos.  Be on the look out for these fun activities.
     

ISP - GOOGLE CLASSROOM

  • Our Instructional Support Team has developed a Google Classroom to be available for any of our students with learning differences.  They will also communicate via email and be available for any support needed. Click here for a How-to Guide on logging into Google Classroom.

How to Log into Google Classroom

  1.  Login to your DC gmail account.

  2. In the top right corner, under your google applications, you will see “Classroom.”  Click on this.

  3. In the top right hand corner, you will see a plus sign.  Click on this.

  4. Click “Join.”

  5. Enter the first link you see below and then click “join.”

  6. Repeat steps 4 and 5 until you have joined all of your classes.

Tips & Resources

Distance Learning Tips from Sidewell Friends School in Washington, D.C.
  • Daily Schedules:
     Kids, and adults, love and need routines in their lives.  During this time of seemingly unscheduled days, consider building a daily schedule with your kids.  We have provided a sample below that might help you structure your days. We know that specific times of day may vary from family to family, i.e., some bedtimes, lunch times, etc. are earlier/later than others, but this at least serves as a sample.  CLICK HERE
  • Create a Study Space for your Child
  • Stay in Communication with your child's Teacher
  • Encourage Independence 
  • Help your Child Maintain Social Contact with Peers 
    • We recommend virtual contact
    • Please limit/avoid typical in person social interactions, per the CDC guidelines in order to mitigate the potential spread of COVID-19
    • Example, skype, facetime, zoom play groups, etc.
  • Encourage Physical Activity and Movement and Monitor Student Stress
